Mauritius is rather unique in having a dual set of laws. There is the ''Code Napoleon'', a legacy of the French occupation of the island together with Statute Laws passed by the Legislative Assembly. This rather curious state of affairs came about when the British invaded the island in 1810. When the French surrendered to the British, they obtained from their victors that their property and customs and laws would be respected. Furthermore, the new administrators found it easier to keep the ''Code Napoleon'' than to overhaul the legal system.
